Signs it may be time to say goodbye to a pet

A quality-of-life framework to discuss with your veterinarian when making an end-of-life decision.

Look for patterns in comfort, breathing, appetite, hydration, mobility, hygiene, interest in family and whether good days still outnumber bad days.

Write observations down and ask your veterinarian what can be treated, what is likely to worsen and what an emergency might look like. Quality-of-life scales can support a discussion but do not replace veterinary advice.

Choosing euthanasia to prevent suffering can be an act of care. The timing is rarely emotionally easy, even when it is medically reasonable.
