How to tell a child the family dog has died

A gentle, age-aware way to explain a pet’s death honestly and support a child through grief.

Use clear, simple words such as “died” rather than phrases that can confuse a child, including “went to sleep.” Choose a quiet moment and explain what happened in a few honest sentences.

Let the child react in their own way. Questions, tears, silence, anger and returning quickly to play can all be normal. Answer only what they ask, and admit when you do not know.

Invite them to take part in remembering: draw a picture, choose a photograph, write a message, or help create a memorial page. Reassure them that the pet’s death was not their fault and that the adults who care for them are safe and present.
