Coping with guilt after pet loss

Ways to respond to second-guessing about treatment, timing and end-of-life choices.

Guilt often appears because you cared deeply and had to make decisions with incomplete information. The mind revisits those decisions as though certainty should have been possible.

Separate facts from hindsight. Write down what you knew at the time, what the veterinarian advised and what you were trying to protect your pet from.

Talk with someone who understands the situation. Self-compassion does not mean the decision was painless; it means recognizing that love and uncertainty existed together.
